Do you know the AP exam has a Late Testing option?

It is provided to you when you cannot take your AP exam on the prescribed date for some reason and would like to attempt it at a later scheduled time or date.

College Board has listed certain reasons which are considered valid for late testing requests. The Board also accommodates you through late testing (make-up exam), if you miss your AP exam due to an unplanned, unavoidable reason.

However, you cannot choose your late testing date yourself, only your AP coordinator can do that for you. Moreover, not all AP papers have a late testing option, so, you will have to start by finding out if your subject qualifies for late testing and if it does, then you will have to follow the stipulated application program.

Read on to more about the AP late testing option and understand how you can apply for them & also find the AP Late Testing 2024 Dates.

What is AP Late Testing?

Life is unpredictable and often does not go as planned. The same may happen with your AP exams. When you fill up the form a few months before the exam day, you can never predict if something may go wrong and you might miss your exam. This is why the College Board has made the provision of Late Testing, which gives you a second chance with the AP exams.

Is the late AP exam difficult? No, it is set according to the same curriculum, it is just a different set of questions than the first exam. The late AP exam questions are different from the first test for security reasons. So, the students who take it on the first attempt cannot share the questions with the late exam takers.

College Board’s List of Acceptable Unavoidable Reasons

If your reason for missing an AP exam is present in the below list, you will be allowed to take a make-up exam for free. If it doesn’t, you will have to pay a pre-decided fee for the exam or you may not be allowed to take the late exam at all.

  • There is an IB exam or some other important national or state exam on the same day.
  • There are two AP exams lined up in the same slot.
  • There are schedule issues with your language lab in case of a foreign language exam.
  • The day is marked by a religious holiday.
  • There is an official sport meet on exam day.
  • There is an academic event on the day.
  • There is a national holiday on exam day.
  • There is an issue with the disability accommodations.

College Board’s List of Acceptable Unexpected Reasons

There may be a situation where you experience a sudden emergency and you have to miss your AP exam despite of your best-laid plans. In such cases, you have to inform your coordinator as soon as you can. Your AP coordinator will then decide if your reason qualifies for late AP testing (no charge) and will pass on your request to the College Board. Some of the reasons that might be accepted by the College Board are:

  • An issue with the disability accommodation.
  • A bomb or fire scare at school.
  • A family tragedy.
  • A natural disaster.
  • Serious injury or illness.

Your AP coordinator is the main key to your late testing exam. If he/she feels that your reason is genuine, they can always recommend you for the make-up exam. But for some reason, if you fail to convince the coordinator, your chances of qualifying for the late exam will be nil.

Which Conflicts are Deemed Avoidable by the College Board?

There are several reasons that the College Board does not consider. Some of them are:

1. There is a class exam on the AP exam day

In this case, the College Board prescribes that you must apply to reschedule the class test rather than applying for a late AP test.

2. There is a school holiday

In case of a preplanned non-national school holiday, the AP board does not consider the request for late testing.

3. There is a family commitment

In case of a family commitment when it’s not an emergency, the College Board does not consider the late testing request.

Your reasons might be different from the reasons listed above. Say for example, you may have a splitting headache on the exam day or you missed your alarm on the exam morning, which might both be genuine for you but the College Board will still expect you to take the exam.

To check if you qualify for late AP testing, you should talk to your AP coordinator. You can also call the College Board directly to discuss your issue.

How to Apply for AP Late Testing?

You can apply for late testing through your AP coordinator. As already mentioned, you cannot choose the date for the exam. The coordinator will be able to do that for you and they will also have to choose from some of the preset dates given by the College Board.

So, the first step towards late AP testing is to inform your school or district AP coordinator and they will guide you from there.

What if you miss the AP Late Testing?

If you miss the late testing exam, you miss the chance to take the AP exam in the current year. Next year, you will have to fill out the form again and pay the designated fees to take the exam.

AP Late Testing Dates for 2024

AP Exam is approaching. What is different this time? Has the pandemic affected how the exams will be conducted? Here is a quick read that will answer all your questions and will update you about the AP exams 2024.

Students Won’t be Choosing the AP Exam Dates

This year, students won’t be able to choose the AP exam date. Rather, the AP coordinators in the schools will be able to choose the dates from the 3 available options. This process will start in early March.

AP 2024 Exams Will be Full Length

AP exams 2024 will be full-length both in offline and online formats. This means they will cover the full curriculum and most exams will be 2-3 hours long.

Digital Exams – Who Can Appear?

This year, digital exams will be conducted for students whose school building is closed because of the pandemic or the student cannot visit the school for health reasons. Your school will authorize you to take the exam at home or school.

Students will be able to appear for digital exams using their laptops, desktops, or Chromebooks. Since the exams consist of free responses, they cannot be attempted on smartphones.

Certain exams can only be taken digitally such as Chinese and Japanese and other exams can only be taken offline (other language exams). Students will have to check out The College Board website for all the details.

Digital Exams will be conducted at the Same Time Across the Globe

Digital exams will start at the set time across the world. Students won’t be able to control the timings. So, international students may have to attempt the test at unusual hours.

Students won’t be able to Re-attempt Questions

Furthermore, the app does not allow moving back and forth between questions, meaning, students won’t be able to move back to a question they did not answer or would like to change the answer.

Students will have to Choose One

Students will be able to take a test online or offline. Both formats cannot be attempted.

Questions for Online Exams will be Slightly Different

Online and offline formats of AP exams will be slightly different. For example, in the case of an online exam, students will be asked to answer questions according to a graph rather than drawing a graph.

Digital Exams will Need some Preparations

In terms of studies, the preparation will be the same. However, to attempt the AP exams online, students will have to undertake some simple setups on their laptops/desktops. These will be related to software downloads and security protocols. The College Board will be using plagiarism software to ensure students are not cheating along with must-haves like a camera and a photo ID. The College Board will share the details with the schools shortly and the students will be updated in time for the exam.

Deadlines have Been Extended

The College Board has extended the deadline for a certain course. If you need to submit a portfolio for an art exam or principal for your computer exams, you must check out the new deadline which has been pushed to May 20th, 2024, 11:59 PM.

No Cancellation Fees This Year

The College Board has waived the cancellation fees for all AP exams. If you have registered for an exam but you are not sure if you are ready this year, you do not have to pay the fees. You can simply withdraw from the exam and attempt it next year.

Digital Exam Practice Platform will be Launched in April

Since 2021 is the first year when students are going to attempt AP exams online, The College Board has decided to launch a practice platform in April, so that students can get used to how everything is going to look and work on the exam day.

So, yes. The pandemic has changed the AP Exam 2024. Students are requested to stay abreast with the latest information. We will also be updating this page as we get more information. While you keep an eye on the information, do not forget to prepare for the exams, since the exams are going to be full curriculum and future depends on it, like every other year.

Are you preparing to take an AP exam? If so, you may be wondering what constitutes a good AP score. After all, your score on an AP exam can affect your college admissions and course placement. The truth is that the definition of a “good” AP score varies depending on your goals and the college or university you plan to attend.

In most cases, AP Score above 3 is considered to be a Good Score as it places you in a higher percentile with respect to other students.

This blog will guide you on what is a Good AP Score and why a good AP score matters.

AP Scores for College Admission

When it comes to the college admissions process, AP scores can play a huge role. Colleges use AP scores to determine a student’s eligibility for admission and placement in certain college courses. A high score on an AP exam can demonstrate that a student is academically prepared for college-level coursework.

In most cases, students who score a 3 or higher on an AP exam will be accepted into the college of their choice. The higher the score, the better chance the student has of being accepted and potentially being granted college credit for the course. Most colleges and universities accept scores of 4 and 5 for college credit, but some may require a higher score for the same.

Some colleges may also use AP scores as part of their overall admission criteria. This could mean that a student with lower grades and test scores but a higher AP score might still be accepted, while another student with higher grades and test scores but lower AP scores might be denied admission.

In addition, many colleges and universities are starting to look more closely at AP scores as an indicator of college readiness. Some institutions are even using these scores as part of their merit-based scholarships and financial aid programs. Therefore, taking AP exams and achieving good scores can not only get you into college, but also help reduce your tuition costs.

Overall, AP scores are an important factor to consider when applying to colleges, as they can make or break your chances of admission and even give you a leg up when it comes to scholarship opportunities.

AP scores are also used for placement into college courses

When you submit your AP scores for college admissions, they may also be used to help place you in specific courses within the school. For example, a score of 3 or higher on an AP Biology exam may indicate that you are ready to take a college-level course in biology. Schools may use your AP scores to decide if you should be placed in a more advanced course or in a lower-level course.

In addition to helping with placement into courses, some schools also use AP scores to determine whether or not you can get credit for taking certain classes. For example, some colleges and universities will award credit for passing AP tests in certain subjects. This means that, depending on the college you attend, you may be able to get credit for taking a course without actually having to take the class itself.

AP scores can be a great tool for helping you prepare for college-level courses and possibly even earn college credit. It’s important to understand how your AP scores may be used for course placement and for possible college credit so that you can make the most of your high school experience.

What is a Good AP Score?

When it comes to AP scores, there is no definitive answer as to what is considered “good”. Generally speaking, a score of 3 or higher is considered passing, and can potentially qualify you for college credit at many universities. However, the amount of college credit you will receive will depend on the individual school’s policy. Many schools require a score of 4 or 5 to be eligible for credit, while others may require even higher.

The best way to determine a good AP score is to research the individual policies of the colleges or universities you are interested in. Some may have higher requirements than others, and they may also give more weight to certain tests over others. It’s important to understand the policies of the schools you are considering, as this can help you determine what score is necessary to receive college credit.

AP Good Score

AP Exam Score Scale

AP exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5 (the highest score being 5). The score you receive on an AP exam is based on the number of correct answers you provide. Your score is not based on the number of questions you answer, so you should try to answer as many questions as you can, even if you are not sure of the correct answer.

Most colleges and universities will award credit for scores of 4 or 5, but some may also award credit for scores of 3. You should check with the college or university you plan to attend to find out their specific policies for awarding credit for AP exams.

AP Exam Score Recommendation College Grade Equivalent
5 Extremely Well Qualified A+ or A
4 Very Well Qualified A-, B+, or B
3 Qualified B-, C+, or C

AP Exams or AP Tests are the tests conducted after completion of AP courses in high school. AP courses cover advanced levels of the curriculum and give high school students a chance to analyze their potential and prove their readiness for college. AP stands for Advanced Placement.

AP exams are conducted by the College Board and are one of the most popular exams taken by high schoolers to boost their college application. AP scores are considered in the college application process and help students skip semesters with the college credits.

AP exam scores are not considered by all colleges but they are definitely recognized as a sign of hard work and persistence and hence, are known to impress the admission officers and improve the chances of selection.

What is the AP Exam Registration Process?

You can register for AP exams at your school if it offers AP courses. If your school does not offer AP courses, you can register to take the exam at a nearby high school that offers or administers AP exams. To search for an AP exam center near your home or school, you can check the AP Course Ledger. It is a comprehensive list of schools that are eligible to offer the test.

Once you narrow down the school’s name, you can call or visit and ask for the school’s AP coordinator. He/she will guide you from there.

How AP Subjects does College Board Offer?

There are 38 AP courses in various segments such as English, History, Science, Arts, World Languages, Computer Science, etc. You won’t find all of them at your school. Most schools in the US offer courses but the number of courses may vary. You have to choose your course/s among the options offered by your school. You cannot request a subject that is not on the list.

Currently, there is no limit to how many AP courses you can take in an academic year. However, this may change in future, with College Board fixing the number of classes between 2-4 based on the high school year (sophomore, junior and senior).

If you are not sure how many and which AP courses you should choose, you can talk to your school’s AP coordinator or your mentor. Experienced educators believe that students must choose subjects that they would like to study in college. It is also advised that you should go for a limited number of subjects to effectively manage the workload and get good scores in the current grade and AP exams.

How Are AP Exams Scored?

AP subjects are scored on a scale of 1-5. For college credit, a student has to get top scores, which means, if you get a 4 or 5 in your AP exam, only then do you stand a chance to earn college credits and hope to skip a semester or a year. Anything less than 4 may not qualify for the credits but it will definitely boost your personal records and college application.

AP scores do not affect your high school grades or GPA. Both work independently of each other. Also, remember that all colleges do not accept AP scores for credit. If the college you want to go to, isn’t keen on AP, you completely skip the courses and focus on your high school GPA.

What are the Benefits of Taking AP Courses?

  • The most popular and desired benefit of AP courses is college credit. AP exam scores give your college credit which can be used to skip a semester. In some cases, students get a chance to skip two semesters or say a year of college because of the credit. In turn, they save money on tuition and other campus expenses.
  • Next comes the reduced timeline of graduation. When you skip a semester, you graduate earlier than your peers.
  • AP classes add to college readiness with their increased difficulty and in-depth study of a subject. They prepare students for all the hard work that is to come. Automatically, students who take AP courses, perform well in college.
  • College admission officers like it when they see a CV filled with extra efforts and nothing showcases extra efforts better than AP courses.
  • Last but not the least, AP classes, give you a chance to study the subjects you love. They are an opportunity to focus on your interests and as a result, your knowledge improves and so do your scores.

An AP class or a dual enrolment can help students get ahead in college. They not only give them a head start but also save time and money in terms of the college semesters. But how does that happen? What are AP classes and Dual Enrollment? What is the difference between the two and which one is better? Let’s find out the answer to all these questions.

AP Classes

AP classes or advanced placement classes are entry-level college courses that are offered in almost all public and private schools. An AP class for a subject is offered as a standardized school class and is designed to help students prepare for a college-level curriculum. These classes build on the topics that the students are already studying in school and easily take them one step ahead.

AP classes are standardized as opposed to high school courses which vary in curriculum according to the teacher. Students prepare for the AP exam in their AP classes and appear for the exam overseen by the AP College Board. The main aim of an AP exam is to demonstrate a student’s knowledge of college-level subjects and the fact that they can handle college-level work.

In a way, AP exam scores work like SAT to impress the college admission panel. These scores are considered along with the application and the candidates are vetted accordingly. It must be noted that AP classes can get a student high school credit and the AP exam scores can lead to potential college credit. While SAT students get none of these except a boost to their college application.

AP Exam Subjects

The College Board offers 34 AP subject exams. It covers everything from different languages to science, math, and arts. To check the complete list of AP subjects, you can click here.

How can you Earn College Credit?

The full form of AP – Advanced Placement is itself indicative of the fact that it provides some type of advancement to the students. AP exams enable students to earn college credits in high school. This credit helps them skip a semester or a year at college because they have already studied the subject/topics.

This way, an AP exam help in saving as much as one college year along with related expenses such as tuition fees, boarding fees, etc. The saved year also paves the way for double majors, faster degrees, and extra time for travel and other activities.

Dual Enrollment

Dual enrollment or concurrent enrollment is when students studying in high school, take classes at a local college and simultaneously earn college credit. It is the process of allowing students to enroll in two academic institutions at once: a high school and a college.

Dual enrollment provides students with a chance to move ahead to advanced courses and be ready for the upcoming subjects. The biggest benefit of dual enrollment is that it lets the students accumulate college credits while in school and helps them graduate early or right on time.

Dual enrollment gives the students a chance to study a subject that isn’t offered at their high school. It also provides them an insight into how college and its course-work feel like. Dual enrollment can help high-school students delve deeper into their academic interests and explore them with precision and depth.

Dual enrollment can also be a chance to get admission to a preferred college by demonstrating the ability to handle difficult course work and a penchant for hard work. Admission offers are often very keen about this ability while choosing the students for their college, therefore, along with college credits, a dual enrollment also improves the chances of getting admissions to top colleges across the country.

Dual Enrollment Application

To participate in a dual enrollment program, a student must sign a participation form at the high school. He/she will also be required to meet some basic admission criteria at the post-secondary institution and then make satisfactory progress.

How can you Earn College Credit?

Students earn college credit if they pass a dual enrollment class with grades C and above. But one important thing to remember is that not all prestigious institutes grant college credit for the coursework completed during school time. So, before you enroll in a dual enrollment class, you must find out if your preferred college considers dual enrollment or AP classes or none of them.

Both AP Exams and Dual Enrollment provide meritorious students with a chance to test their mettle. They both can help in earning college credits and the opportunity to graduate earlier. The difference lies mostly in how they work rather than what they can do for a student. Which one is better? The answer to this completely lies in your plans and inclination towards particular subjects.

If you are considering choosing between the two, you will have to check several factors as the availability of classes at your school, subject availability, and of course, your preferred college’s criteria. You can always talk to your school counselor or a teacher for guidance.

Advanced Placement Class or AP Class is your key to success in college and the corporate world. Yes, high school is difficult, and adding a few AP credits makes it even more difficult. But there are some incredible advantages of taking an advanced placement class in high school.

6 Advantages of Taking Advanced Placement Classes in High School

If you are not sure about why you should add up to your high school stress, read on. Here you will learn the main advantages of studying AP Courses in high school. You will also learn how taking an AP class in high school does not just improve your scores but also prepares you for the challenges of college and corporate life.

Let’s dive more here into some advantages of taking AP Classes:

1.    You get to Impress the Admission Committee

Getting into a college takes a lot of effort and that includes impressing the admission committee and this committee does not get impressed by just marks. Most prestigious colleges want to choose individuals who are excellent all-rounders and are capable of working tremendously hard.

When you choose AP classes in high school, you show the college committee that you are serious about your studies and willing to go out of your way to build your future.

It also puts light on the fact that you can work hard while sacrificing play and party time. College admission committees prefer individuals who can think ahead, plan and stick to their plans.

Overall, the college admission panel needs to know that you are committed to your future and willing to work hard to achieve your dreams. An AP class in your record adds up to your credibility and puts you ahead of other applicants. So, this is the first but most crucial advantage of taking AP Classes in High School.

2.    You get to Study a Subject In-depth

When you choose a subject in high school, you learn the basics of it. You are introduced to the subject along with some key topics. But when you choose to take an AP class in high school, you get to learn the subject in depth.

For example, if you choose Biology in high school, you will study a general biology course while the AP Biology class will have lessons designed with attention to detail and a focus on helping you choose a Biology major or minor in college. The AP class will help you score better in college because of what you have already learned.

3.    You Get a Head Start in College

Some colleges allow you to earn AP credits if you take AP exams. An AP class prepares you to score well on a scale of 1-5 and you can add it to your future credits to stay ahead of your peers.

The AP credit can help you skip one full college year. This way, you get ahead of your classmates by one year and also scale up your academic plans. On the other hand, by skipping one year of college, you also save a substantial amount of money that would have otherwise gone toward college fees and other expenses.

4.    You Achieve Academic Success

As already mentioned, an AP class makes you work extra hard and arms you with extra knowledge that can come in handy while you take up specializations and majors in college. Furthermore, tackling one or more AP classes with your high school curriculum prepares you to put in extra hours towards your studies daily.

A study has shown that students who score 3 or higher in AP exams, experience greater academic success in college as compared to non-AP peers.  So, it won’t be wrong to say that the AP class helps you achieve academic success because of what you have learned in the subject and as an individual.

5.    You Challenge Yourself and Grow as an Individual

One crucial advantage that comes from taking AP classes in high school is that you learn to challenge yourself and think out of the box. AP classes come with an intense workload that needs you to work hard and study long hours. You also require extraordinary mental capabilities along with time management skills and discipline.

When you work on these skills early in life, by the time you reach the corporate world you will become a self-motivated person, who is open to learning new things and faces challenges head-on only to learn new things and stay ahead of others.

6.    You Improve your Chances of Receiving Grants and Scholarships

Your grades in high school, class rankings, and other credentials can improve your chances of getting financial aid in college in terms of grants and scholarships.

While several grants and scholarships look at academic excellence and ACT/SAT scores to calculate the amount of financial aid, some look at academic excellence and rigor. Therefore, having an AP credit to your name can instantly impress the admission panel and open the doors to much-needed financial aid.

The Bottom Line

Summing up, taking AP Classes, even just one can be a great benefit for your GPA.

It can also give your college application a boost by showcasing your rigor and interest in a particular subject. You can take one or more subjects according to your interest and future plans.

However, not all colleges consider the AP scores equally. Therefore, if you have a favorite college/s, you must first find out their admission process and preferences and then plan your high school subjects accordingly.

For help, you can turn to AP exam tutoring. Online AP exam tutoring can help you prepare for your AP exams while acing your high school subjects.
